It has been said by her former clients when they sought her advice addressing the Human Rights Centre, which Vera Stramkouskaya headed for many years.

Journalists are told in the Centre that Vera Stramkouskaya left the country on a holiday, and they do not know whether she will return. The reason for leaving of the well-known human rights activist is not commented by her colleagues. The Human Rights Centre states that the organisation continues its work, but its leadership has changed, Radio Svabod ainfroms.

The advocates’ consultation office of Pershamajski district where Vera Stramkouskaya worked it is said she left her job since October 15.

According to some sources, Vera Stramkouskaya left for Switzerland, and the reasons for that are connected with her personal life.

Vera Stramkouskaya was engaged in human rights activities in Belarus since the end of the 1990ies. As a lawyer she defended such prominent figures and politicians as Vasil Staravojtau, Mikola Statkevich, Mikhail Marynich, activists of the youth movement and participants of the street rallies of protest. Some sources say that thanks to her efforts as a lawyer this year the so-called “live shield” case has became well-known and has come to trial.
