Taking the kids to San Diego? Read this post

There are so many reasons to visit San Diego- amazing beaches, great food, incredible weather, and of course, plenty of attractions for the whole family.

This is a super kid-friendly destination, however, we all know that traveling with kids is a little trickier than traveling solo. If you’re thinking about taking the kids to San Diego, here are some tips:

Hire a car

San Diego is gorgeous, but it’s also super spread out. And there’s so much to do and see, but the public transport could use some work. That’s why it’s such a good idea to rent a car in San Diego. From there, you can head straight to your hotel, get settled in, and then go out and explore whenever you like- without needing to worry about expensive Ubers and taxis or figuring out which buses to take.

Take it slow

San Diego is designed for kids, but if you’re not careful, you may find yourself trying to cram in as much fun as possible- and ending up with some very tired kids. We all know what happens when kids get overtired, and it’s not fun. For this reason, it’s a good idea to plan plenty of breaks. Go out early in the morning and see the sights, and then head back to your hotel, take a swim in the pool, grab some lunch, put the kids down for a nap, and go out again later.

Be money smart

Like any destination with a lot of attractions, San Diego can be difficult on your wallet if you’re not careful. Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can save money and still have a great time. First, begin putting some money aside well before your trip. If you can, book your vacation outside of peak season and avoid school holidays to get much better deals on flights and accommodation. You also don’t need to pay full price for major attractions- make sure you check websites to find discounted tickets and keep an eye out for deals on sites like LivingSocial and Groupon in the weeks and months leading up to your trip for specials and discounts.

Take a drive

This area is simply gorgeous, which is why it’s another good reason to rent a car in San Diego. Drive up the coast, take your swimsuit, and stop off in some of the many charming spots like Carlsbad, Encinitas Solana Beach, Del Mar, and La Jolla. A road trip is always a good option with kids since you can easily stop off whenever you like and let the kids stretch their legs while you take selfies with the incredible scenery.

Bring your big jeans

San Diego has an amazing food scene, attracting tourists from around the world. Munch on fresh seafood, local cuisine, and some of the many award-winning, locally brewed beers. You must have a California burrito, so be sure to head to Lucha Libre or Lolitas for some of the best. Of course, fish tacos are also a must, and you’ll find them throughout the city (although Oscar’s Mexican Seafood) is a standout.

Build in some downtime

One of the best things to do in San Diego? Wander. Head to La Jolla and browse the shops before you check out Seal Rock. Then, take the kids to Coronado where you can enjoy the view of San Diego, grab an ice cream, and explore the market. While there are plenty of attractions, make sure you also include a few hours each day for some downtime- the whole family will benefit from this.
