3 Ways to Extend Your Travels

I love travelling and I’m constantly looking for new ways to extend my trips or to plan a new vacation. It can be hard finding the spare money when you’re stuck in the daily grind of work, bills and a social life. But if you’re already on the road, or about to head off soon, here are three ways you can extend your travels:

1. Volunteering
I spent quite a bit of time volunteering in various countries in Asia and Central America, and not only is it one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, but it’s a wonderful way to make lasting friendships. I think as someone who comes from a country with wealth and resources, it’s important to acknowledge that and give back where you can. There are so many ways you can volunteer, from volunteering to teach English (or your native tongue) in rural communities, through to more hands on volunteering like building homes. You can even volunteer to walk around beaches and clean up pounds of plastic to help make a difference casually on your vacations!

2. Working Online
Working remotely is a great way to get funds in so you can afford to keep traveling. There are so many different things you can do online, from blogging (you can even do travel blogging and talk about things like Santa Barbara Travel or even financial blogging – the options are endless) to working as a virtual assistant. What you choose to do will depend on your experience and skill set. There are plenty of opportunities out there and a good place to start looking is Upwork.

3. Become an Au Pair
I spent a summer working as an au pair in Madrid and absolutely loved it. Most au pairs are females, but there are a few men that also choose to do it. Essentially you become like a “big brother” or “sister” to some children in a family. You’ll be given your own room, some pocket money each month and the work load is generally quite light, giving you time to travel or to at least explore the city you’re in. It’s a great way to live with a family from a different country, learn a little more about the culture and to hopefully make some friendships that will last – whether it’s your host family, or other people you meet while being an au pair.
