Top Tips for Your First Visit to the Dead Sea

Known for its extreme salt content, the Dead Sea is a popular attraction for visitors to Jordan and Israel.  It is actually the deepest hypersaline lake in the entire world and many people come here to experience the truly unique experience of being able to float on water.  However, if you are planning on visiting the Dead Sea in the near future, there are some useful bits of information you will need to know.

Wear the Right Footwear

Know that it can sometimes be quite rocky underfoot, so it would be wise to wear something on your feet when you go in.  While flip flops are great for lounging around near a pool, you’re going to want something a bit sturdier for a visit to the Dead Sea.  Sandals with a strap around the ankle or even swimming shoes with closed toes would be perfect.

Don’t Shave, and Cover Up Scrapes and Cuts

If you usually shave in the 24 hours leading up to a day at the pool, know that this is not a good idea before entering into a salt lake.  Ideally, you want to shave at least two to three days before a dip in the Dead Sea.  If you shave on the day, the high salt levels will seriously irritate sensitive skin and will ruin your whole experience.  This is also why you need to cover up any cuts and scrapes with a waterproof plaster.

Do Not Swallow the Water

The extremely high sodium concentration in the water can be lethal if swallowed.  You also need to avoid getting any of the water in your eyes as this can be extremely painful.  To avoid splashing, it is advisable to float in the Dead Sea rather than swim. It is a good idea to walk slowly into the lake and then lay back gently.  Under no circumstances should you dive, run, or put your face in the water.

Make Use of the Mud

Once you know how to enter the lake safely, you can then relax and enjoy the benefits of the Dead Sea mud.  Simply pick up some mud from the bottom of the lake and smear it all over your face and body.  It is a spa experience like no other, and best of all, you don’t have to pay for it!  Dead Sea mud is extremely beneficial to the skin due to its high mineral content.

Rinse off Well

After your visit to the Dead Sea, you will want to make sure you have rinsed yourself thoroughly with fresh water.  In fact, it might be an idea to wear an old swimming costume for your visit, as the salt content can cause discolouration.  There are showers provided at most of the main swimming spots, so make sure you bring shampoo and body wash.

So, now that you are armed with the top tips for your first visit to the Dead Sea, all that’s left to do is book it!
